@Tina_p and I have been pretty keen to try and help these fabulous gatherings come back to life in Adelaide and it seems that, along with the support of other fabulous teachers like @MarkeetaRP and @JessOttewell we’re slowly succeeding with our plan. We’ve actually had two TM’s already and our third one is coming up really soon.
To help with the organisation of these events, we’ve been trying to tie them to Professional Development opportunities that are already happening. The first and second ones were run straight after the first and second Reflect Growth meetups. The third will run on the evening before this year’s annual EdTechSA conference. Although it takes a little bit of organising in terms of buying cakes and coffee, finding a venue and setting up registration the teach meet isn’t owned or run by anyone in particular. That seems to have been an interesting concept for some. No, it’s not a Reflect Growth Teachmeet nor indeed does it have any particular affiliation to EdtechSA. Instead there’s a small group of passionate teachers, based in Adelaide who are looking to find ways to connect with others. The fact that we’ve been able to tag onto other PD events has just been a fabulous bonus for many reasons 😉
We try and keep the TM’s well organised but informal. Imagine you’re at the pub (or maybe the karaoke bar.. there’s a projector and screen after all) and people are sat around eating cake and drinking coffee. People have opted to give either 2 or 7 minute mini presentations about something they’ve been doing in the last few weeks at school. Sometimes they might present something in order to get some advise. For example, in the first TM I presented two applications. One called Meerkat, the other You Now. I was grappling with why I was ok with one app and not the other. Take a look…. See if you can guess which one concerned me most 😉 We had a really great conversation about them both, had a play and drew some conclusions.
In the second TM (on May 30th) we had even more presentations – fantastic! @misscmorrison shared the work that she’d been doing with students looking more at the process of writing than the end product, @paulhuebl shared how he’s been using podcasts with his students, @canhaynes showed us some of the ways she’s been using iBooks in her school… there were some fabulous ideas there!

I would encourage you to come along and try out a TM. We’ve been trying to have one every 4/5 weeks. You don’t have to present at all. In fact you are welcome to come along and suss it out, soak up the sharing and knowledge from others. If you decided there and then you might have something to share we can add you to this list anyway. There’s really no pressure to perform 😉
After I noticed that people weren’t really sure WHAT to present about we decided to have a theme for all future Teach Meet Adelaides. So we asked everyone on the Facebook group to make a suggestion and then used the classtools name picker to choose from the list.
Thank you for all the great theme ideas…. Some fab topics in there – i’m very glad I let the computer decide 🙂 It picked Well being 🙂 Thank you to @equilibriumctc for suggesting it 🙂
